Night Scenes: A Sultry and Political Gay Film

March 21, 2026

When a campaigning politician and a young actor meet around their exhibitionist fantasies, a dangerous game begins… Dark and hypnotic, Night Scenes hits theaters on March 18.

Seven years after their sublime Tinta Bruta (Hard Paint, crowned with a Teddy Award at Berlin), Felipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, a Brazilian filmmaking duo, return with Night Scenes, a fascinating noir film released in cinemas on Wednesday, March 18. At the heart of the plot lies the meeting between Matias, a young actor in a theatre troupe, and Rafael, a politician surrounded by mysteries and henchmen, around their shared fantasy: exhibitionism…

Night Scenes is a film about desire and masks. Those that Matias and his roommate, also an actor like him, must wear to feign heterosexuality and thus hope to become popular actors, but also Rafael’s, who is likewise forced to stay in the closet to carve a path in the cruel game of politics.

Film Noir and Gay Sex

If the film embraces a powerful noir aesthetic, Felipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon achieve an exciting blend of genres, weaving together a thriller, gay sex, and philosophical inquiry. How far can one go for a role or for power? What are the protagonists willing to sacrifice of their values or of their truth? To what extent is it bearable to hide who one is?

Through these dilemmas, Night Scenes offers a reinterpretation of the challenges surrounding gay visibility. And this while placing the fantasies of its protagonists at the heart of the script. Never mere accessories, the sex scenes are thus key moments in the narrative; the ending closes the film in an absolutely unforgettable, provocative, and political way.
